Bush granted Presidential Medal of FreedomMay 19, 2005 00:00 Stunning opponents with a crafty political maneuver, President George W. Bush awarded himself the Presidential Medal of Freedom in a Rose Garden Ceremony today. In a somber voice, the President declared that by invading two "heathen stone-age countries and killing over 100,000 Iraqi terrorists at the cost of only 1,600 dead US soldiers" he had done more to promote the spread of freedom around the planet than any other president, "living or dead." The President also stated that he hoped that Operation Iraqi Freedom would stand for all time as an example of how to wage war "fast, cheap, and with a minimum of Christian soldiers dead." The President's father, George H. W. Bush stood in the front row of the audience, watching the presentation tearfully. An unnamed White House source stated that the elder Bush was heard to something about "having my own medal if only I could have beaten that damned Saddam." The ceremony was also attended by Tom DeLay. The Texas Senator's shopping mall engraving stand franchise chain was recently granted the DOD contract to produce all Gulf War purple heart medals.
