Don't Change Large Carnivore Management RulesJuly 28, 2006 10:06 The US Forest Service is proposing to allow helicopter hunting in wilderness areas to 'manage' wolf and other predator populations. We're opposed to this action.

I am writing to oppose the Forest Service proposal to revise the Forest Service Manual regarding the predator control policy in designated Wilderness Areas and Research Natural Areas.

I believe that this could lead to indiscriminate killing of wolves and other essential carnivores in areas where they have -- until now -- lived free and wild.

The proposal is in opposition to the intent of the Wilderness Act, which is to maintain roadless areas in their natural, remote conditions. Killing predator species -- key to a healthy ecosystem -- could alter the natural conditions and upset the ecological balance of these special places.

Furthermore, invasive methods such as aerial gunning, motorized vehicles and the use of M-44 cyanide guns to kill native predator populations in these wild lands are inappropriate.

As a former bilogist and a wildlife and outdoors enthusiast, I hope you will consider my comments and abandon the proposal on predator control.
