A puma in captivity
Letter sent to refuge manager J. Paul Cornes.

I oppose opening up a hunt for cougars in the Kofa National Wildlife Refuge.

The hunt threatens to wipe out a desert-adapted population of cougars, since the five known animals is way too small a population to be safely hunted. The famed Yuma Puma, indigenous to this region, could even be exterminated by killing the single known breeding female on the Refuge. Your Environmental Assessment (EA) contains no scientific justification for the hunt and no analysis of the viability of the regional cougar population.

The hunt may also threaten the Desert Bighorn Sheep herd on the Refuge, a herd that evolved to co-exist with desert cougars. The hunt will increase disturbance and stress to these sensitive sheep, already under pressure from a variety of other causes. Again, the EA fails to discuss and assess the threat that hunting cougars poses to this globally-important desert bighorn sheep population.

Finally, I request an extension of the comment period for 60 days beyond Dec. 29, 2006 to allow citizens and scientists to take a closer look at this destructive proposal for an inaugural cougar hunt on a national wildlife refuge in Arizona.
