More on Filibuster CompromiseMay 25, 2005 00:00 Although I believe that compromise such as happened yesterday regarding the filibuster is good, the nomination of Priscilla Owen to the Appellate Court is a judicial low in the modern era. Owen has been protested by civil and womens rights groups who claim that Owen will roll back the clock on individual rights established by US law.
No Compromise on FilibusterMay 25, 2005 00:00 True to form, Conservative Christian Republican leaders have come out en masse to protest the compromise on the filibuster. Not surprisingly, they are most upset at members of their own party who helped engineer the compromise and are threatening to sink them in the next presidential election in 2008.
The Stem Cells are ScreamingMay 25, 2005 00:00 President Bush has threatened to veto legislation passed by the House of Representatives and expected to be passed by the Senate that would expand funding for embryonic stem cell research, ignoring poll results that show that approximately 2/3 of the country favor such funding.
Republican's Hate MothersMay 23, 2005 00:00 The US Supreme Court is agreeing to see a case that asks to reinstate a New Hampshire law that places limits on abortions without specifically including stipulations for protecting the health of the mother.
No Gay Marriage in TexasMay 22, 2005 00:00 The Texas senate approved sending a constitutional amendment that would ban same-sex marriage to voters. Apparently, same-sex marriage would hurt heterosexual marriage in the Lone Star State.
Commentary on Recent NewsMay 19, 2005 00:00 The showdown over the judicial filibuster is heating up. The Republican Right must think that once they have true majority domination, they can change enough laws to make sure that they never lose it. Of course that may happen anyway the way the country is going. Think about it... it's about to become way more expensive to get a driver's licence. We've lost tons of middle class jobs. The 2006 budget cuts adult education subsidies. Pretty soon the former middle class will be begging to get into the military just to be able to eat. As we all 'know,' once you wear a uniform, you're automatically a Republican.
US Attempts to Force Brazillian Stance on ProstitutionMay 04, 2005 00:00 Brazil refused US$40M in anti-AIDS funding because the Bush administration insisted that if Brazil used the money, the country would have to adopt official language condemning prostitution. Brazil refuses to do so because the government fears that stigmatizing prostitution would inhibit sex workers from seeking help for HIV infection.
