70% US High School Graduation Rate???June 22, 2006 07:51 Consistent with my philosophy that we should do as much standardized measuring of our primary education as is reasonable, a variety of studies are coming out now that suggest that the US on-time high school graduation rate is 70%. That's right. 3 in 10 high school freshmen do not graduate in 4 years. That's pathetic.

Our country accounts for half of the world's military spending, amounting to around $600 billion last year when accounting for non-budgeted emergency spending bills for Iraq. That compares to about $12 billion a year for education. See a problem with that? I do.

It's high time that we begin to trim our mililtary spending... let's say by a quarter... and start spending more on our children, college students, and adults seeking reeducation and job training. It's time to invest in our future.
Hawking Says Space Colonies NeededJune 14, 2006 12:52 The survival of the human race depends on its ability to find new homes elsewhere in the universe because there's an increasing risk that a disaster will destroy Earth, world-renowned physicist Stephen Hawking said Tuesday.

Humans could have a permanent base on the moon in 20 years and a colony on Mars in the next 40 years, the British scientist told a news conference.

"We won't find anywhere as nice as Earth unless we go to another star system," added Hawking, who came to Hong Kong to a rock star's welcome Monday. Tickets for his lecture Wednesday were sold out.

Hawking said that if humans can avoid killing themselves in the next 100 years, they should have space settlements that can continue without support from Earth.
